When are electric cars mandatory UK?

The UK government has committed to halting the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. As of this moment in time, the impact that this legislation will have on sales of second-hand cars is unclear, but by 2035 all new cars will need to have zero exhaust emissions. As a result, more and more people are beginning to think about moving from traditional fuel sources to EVs, particularly when you consider that, in the majority of cases, EVs are generally cheaper to run than their petrol and diesel counterparts.

According to research by Which, updated in October 2022, large electric SUVs can cost between 12p to 14.2p per mile (or £975 to £1,150 over a year) to charge from home, whereas smaller and lighter EVs (like the Hyundai Kona Electric) cost from just 9.1p per mile to charge. This is in contrast to the petrol and diesel process, which hit record highs in 2022 and the average cost of filling a family car hit £100 for the first time.
